The Lincoln Christian University (LCU) men’s basketball team (3-3) met the Multnomah University Lions (4-7) from Portland, OR, in the NCCAA Division II Mid-West Region Tip-Off Classic in Grand Rapids, MI, on Friday, December 6, 2013. While LCU scored a season average 79 points in the meeting, the Multnomah Lions managed a near season high with 122 points to win the contest with ease.
LCU dominated the boards, but it wasn't enough to overcome Multnomah scoring. Multnomah put on a 3-point clinic in Grand Rapids, scoring 63 points from outside the arc and another 21 off of LCU turnovers. Besting all other rebounders was LCU freshman Jimmy Smylie, (Springfield, IL/ Calvary Academy) with 13 defensive boards and 4 more at his own end of the floor. Despite this rebounding success, Head Coach Mac Ingmire will almost certainly be focusing some practice time in the coming weeks at the free throw line as LCU managed just 4/15 from the charity stripe.
With four scorers in double digits, the LCU Red Lions were led by freshman forward Josiah Gordon, (Springfield, IL/Lanphier HS) with 17 points, followed by senior guard Blake Saathoff, (Bruce, SD/Estelline High). Both Smylie and Anthony Rush, (Peoria, IL/Illinois Central College) contributed 11 points each to LCU’s total.
