Volleyballs Wins One out of Four

The Lincoln Christian University (LCU) volleyball team traveled to Bloomington, IL, September 20-21, 2013, to play in Illinois Wesleyan University’s (IWU) Barker Classic. LCU (11-5) played four games in the weekend tournament, winning their last one on Saturday against Monmouth College, 3 – 0.

LCU was without their All-American outside hitter Alicia Carson (Gobles, MI/Bloomingdale High) due to an injury. In the first match of the Classic, LCU went up against Carthage College. Carthage controlled the game from the start, winning the three sets with scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-16. 

In the second game, LCU took on Culver-Stockton College (CSC). CSC was able to run away with the game, winning all three sets, 25-17, 25-15, and 25-9. One of the few bright spots of this game was LCU junior libero Emma Donnelly’s (Clinton, IL/Clinton High) 25 digs.

In the third game of the classic, LCU took on host IWU. IWU beat LCU 3-1. Set scores were 19-25, 26-24, 13-25, and 23-25. LCU senior setter Hannah Taylor (Mishawaka, IN/Jimtown High) led the team with 27 assists, while Donnelly had an astounding 33 digs.

In the last game of the day, LCU went up against Monmouth College. In their previous meeting this year, Monmoth beat LCU, 3-2. However, this time LCU wiped the floor clean against Monmoth with a 3-0 vicotry. They won with set scores of 27-25, 25-23, and 27-25. LCU freshman Erin Taylor (Noble, IL/West Richland High) and senior Emily Sheley (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln Community High) led the way as they each recorded 11 kills.
