LCU (9-16) grabbed an early lead in the first game scoring their first run in the bottom of the first inning. SLCC responded with two runs of their own in the third and fourth innings. From there on out, LCU controlled the game, piling up five runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined. Senior Justin Walen (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville High) received the win on the mound, pitching all seven innings. He gave up four hits and one earned run and struck out seven batters.
In the second game, LCU dominated from the beginning. LCU batted around their order as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. They followed up with a single run in each of the second and third innings. By the time SLCC was able to get a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning, LCU had complete control, winning, 8-1. Sophomore pitcher Matt Krause (Mt. Zion, IL/Mt. Zion High) received the win, as he pitched all seven innings and only gave up four hits and one earned run.
From the plate for LCU, sophomore Micah Wolfe (Matoon, IL/NW Ohio Univ.) led the way going 4-5 from the plate, which included a double and one RBI. Sophomore Ty Unger (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln Community High) went 3-5, including a double and two RBI’s. For SLCC, junior Tre Schlief (Altamont, IL) went 2-5 from the plate. Freshman Daniel Swezey (O’Fallon, IL) went 1-5 from the plate, recording the only RBI for SLCC on the day.
LCU will now move on to host the Regional Championship against Maranatha Baptist Bible College (2-13) on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23 and 24 for a three-game series. If LCU wins the three-game series, they will move on to the NCCAA Division II World Series in Mason, OH.
