Baseball Drops Double-HeaderLincoln Christian University baseball hosted Hannibal-Lagrange University (HLU) on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. LCU (4-11) failed to pull out a win as they dropped both games, 15-3 and 4-2.
HLU jumped out to an early lead in the first game, rattling off four runs in the top half of the first inning. They proceeded to score every inning after that, including five runs in the top of the fifth. It was a tough day on the mound for senior pitcher Justin Walen (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville High) as he gave up seven earned runs in four innings of work. For HLU, sophomore pitcher Javier Medina (Caracas, Venezuela) gave up zero earned runs while also striking out eight and only allowing two hits throughout his five innings of work.
The second game of the double-header proved to be a battle as, once again, HLU started off hot, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. LCU was able to respond in the bottom of the third inning with a run of their own. HLU grabbed two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings. As LCU came to bat in the bottom of the seventh, they looked poised to make a comeback by scoring a run and placing two runners on base with two outs and clean-up hitter Ty Unger (Lincoln, IL/Lincoln Community High) up to bat. HLU pitcher Brad Stewart (Abingdon, IL) went toe-to-toe with Unger, eventually striking him out to close out the game.
From the plate, LCU sophomore Micah Wolfe (Matoon, IL/NW Ohio Univ.) led the way, going 3-5 and knocking in two RBI’s. In the second game, LCU pitcher Matt Krause (Mt. Zion, IL/Mt. Zion High) pitched a solid ball game, going all seven innings while only giving up three earned runs. For HLU, freshman Logan Phillips (Salem, IL) went 3-6 while scoring two runs and grabbing two RBI’s. Freshman Brett Anderson (Ashland, MO) went 3-5 from the plate, all three of his hits being singles.
