Teacher Education Consortium Program
Service Learning Requirements

The intention is that Service Learning activities will be completed through weekly involvement in an intentional ministry that is done in an attempt to promote the love of Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Every student is required to complete 12 activities/hours of service each semester.

Teacher Education majors have specific requirements that differ from other majors at LCU. Every TECP major is expected to serve on a weekly basis and to fulfill the following five (5) requirements.

  1. Assist/tutor in a public school
  2. Assist/tutor in a Christian school
  3. Serve in a church setting
  4. Serve in a diverse setting (may be combined with one of the above.)
  5. Every semester you must work with the age group of students for which you will be receiving certification (i.e., if you are getting an elementary degree, you should work with students ages 5-11; if you are getting a degree in secondary ed., you should work with students ages 12-18, etc.)

The Teacher Education Unit will assist students with placement site and information.

  • A Service Learning Site Approval form will be distributed for candidates to fill out. All Service Learning activities must be approved by the Unit.
  • Students serving in schools must also fill out a Volunteer Application form which will be used to secure placement.
  • Students are also responsible for filling out a weekly time log, obtaining their supervisor's signature on it, and recording what activities were accomplished during each session.
  • Toward the end of the semester, the candidate will also provide his/her supervisor with the appropriate Service Learning Reference Evaluation form to fill out.
  • The time log and the Reference Evaluation will then be turned in to the Teacher Education Consortium Program office for verification of service and to keep on record.
  • TECP majors must also fulfill the required Service Learning reports on Angel.

Teacher Education candidates are called to the highest level of service. They are expected to dress, act and speak appropriately as they model the love, service and compassion of Jesus Christ to the students and teachers with whom they serve. Any candidates who do not display the Teacher Education Unit dispositions will be called to account for their actions/behaviors. The Unit evaluation of Service Learning is a component of the evaluation of a candidate's disposition for teaching.
