Dr. Bruce Shields, the Russell F. and Marian J. Blowers Professor of Christian Ministries at Emmanuel, Emeritus. He began teaching there in 1983, after graduating from Milligan College and having ministered with two churches in the area.

At Emmanuel, he brings together his interest and education in the areas of preaching, worship, and biblical studies to help students to exegete New Testament and Old Testament texts, to develop sermons based solidly on those texts, and to express those sermons effectively to their hearers in the context of Christian worship.

While a student in Germany, he served for five years as German-speaking minister of the Christliche Gemeinde (Christian Congregation) in Tubingen. He also ministered for 12 years with churches in Pennsylvania and taught Speech at Eastern Christian College and New Testament at the Lincoln Christian Seminary.

Dr. Shields is a member of the Academy of Homiletics, and often makes presentations to the annual meetings of the academy and reviews German works on homiletics for its journal, Homiletic. He is also a member of Societas Homiletica, the Society of Biblical Literature and the Frederick B. Neumann Symposium on Theological Interpretation of Scripture.
